Sudbury Regatta Aug 2010
St. Ives Rowing Club Triumphant. St. Ives Rowing Club Attended Sudbury 130th International Regatta and was incredibly successful. The Club entered 8 crews, every crew got to their respective event final, even having two all St. Ives finals. The final tally of wins for the regatta was 5, an incredible day out for the club. We had two Womens Juinior 14 Singles who after beating many other competitors met in the final, a cracking race saw Enticknap beat Jones by two lengths. Mens Junior 13 singles saw Gawin beat many London crews and cruised to an easy win in the final. Enticknap teamed up with Milner in the Womens Junior 15 Doubles for our third win, again beating many crews from all over the country. Lilley entered in to Mens Junior 17 singles, a category a year above his status, but unfortunately was just edged out of the win in the final. The elder statesmen of the club also performed well. Woodford and Gilbey teamed up in Masters B doubles (over 37) and won their semi to meet Huntingdon in the final. They went on to a very respectable win. The two gentlemen met in the final of Masters B/C singles, with Woodford coming out victorious after Gilbey met with the bank. A cracking day out for the club, which is now heading onwards and upwards with Juniors and Seniors soon to be getting down to some serious winters training. Check out the results HERE. Check out this photo HERE. More to be put on soon.

St Ives Rowing Club sent several competitors to the British Championships held over the 16th -18th July at Strathcylde Park in Scotland . We had three crews racing in total. The Womens Junior 15 Double of Frances Enticknap and Hannah Milner were competing in the Championships for the second time. They had a brilliant row in the time trials, getting them through to the semi-finals, but with the wind picking up for the semi-finals, they struggled in the tough conditions, meaning they didn't reach the finals. This still leaves them with the respectable position of being in the top 12 crews at a national event. Graham Lilley competed in the Junior 16 singles for the first time at this level and had a respectable row, but unfortunately not enough to get through to the semi-finals. James Hadley competed at the Junior 18 level in a single. After several months out of racing to concentrate on studying for his A-Levels, this was a valiant return to racing, where despite not being far off the pace, he was knocked out in the heats. Coaches and family provided great support and all the effort people took to get themselves all the way up to Strathclyde for a blustery weekend was appreciated.
Cambridge Bumps, written by Mic Bowerman
St. Ives Rowing Club entered an eight in the annual Cambridge Town Bumps this year. The event ran from the 20th July to the 23rd July. The eight, Stroke-Mike Bowerman; Seven-Henry Heylan; Six-John Dolby; Five-Tim Thomas; Four-Steve Dighton; Three- Andy Marsh; Two- Simon Clarke; Bow Andy Oliver coxed by Amy Drummond (subs Stu Moore for Tim Thomas on Friday and Rachel Goodall for Amy Drummond on Thursday) went with a true Olympian spirit of “The objective is the taking part, not the winning”! Tuesday night yielded the unexpected joy of a row over with Simon celebrating the crew behind us getting bumped before grassy corner. Wednesday, and Thursday, brought a more realistic result, but at least the crews behind us had to work to catch us. Friday gave us the prospect of rowing what is called the sandwich boat. This means rowing earlier in the evening at the head of division three and all being well (if the prospect of rowing that distance twice in one evening can be called well) turning straight around and rowing again at the bottom of division two. Rowing head of division three was quite exciting to say the least. Twenty seconds after the picture was taken saw us failing to take grassy corner and giving three spectators sitting on the bank the scare of their lives as we piled into the bank as the following Champs eight tore into us, running over our stroke side oars and breaking one in the ensuing crunch. The row back to the clubhouse past the Plough pub in the Plough reach brought an unexpected and spirit lifting round of applause from the spectators in the pub garden as the remaining six blades rowed us back, heads held high. All in all considering the first time we rowed together as an eight was on Tuesday and the first start we attempted was in the Plough reach on the way to the start on Tuesday we had a great week of rowing. The positive side of this is, with a crew that has some training behind it, our start position of second in division three is sure to be a position that will enable that crew next year to win its oars. Well lets hope so any way. Thanks to Rachel Goodall, Mike Stephenson, Andy, Rachel Heylan, and Tim Rhodes for support and filling in at short notice during the week. Check out a photo of the crew HERE.
The Bridge Article, written by Peter Woodford
St Ives Rowing Club is a friendly and competitive local Club that encourages people from the St Ives area to participate and learn the technical sport of rowing and sculling. In recent years sculling has been very popular with the oarsmen of the club. Single scullers can often been seen zooming up and down the Great Ouse from Hemingford lock to St Ives lock. Juniors are trained in sculling from as young as 11/12 years, where as rowing is not recommended for the junior athletes until the age of 16. St Ives Rowing Club prides itself for the beautiful riverside of the Great Ouse, and friendly bar area over looking the river. The subsidised bar welcomes both social and active members. We hold many social occasions such as the annual dinner where the ladies and gents put on their glad rag’s. We welcome both sexes, and have recently had 3 female captains. The current juniors are succeeding at many Regattas all over the country. And adults of their later years are competing regularly and winning many ‘pots’. We have an excellent relationship with Huntingdon Boat Club, and often have composite crews made from both clubs. If you want to participate in a sport either socially or competitively then come try rowing. It is one of the most physical and technical sports, but also immensely satisfying just being out on the water with you, your mates, and the beauty of the riverside.

Congratulations and thanks to all those that helped out for our Joint Regatta with Huntingdon Boat Club. A successfull days racing for the invitation Regatta which hosted Oundle, Star, Peterborough, and of course Huntingdon and St. Ives. See RESULTS on Results webpage. Also congratulations to the Juniors that represented the club at the Nationals, they waved the SIRC flag for us at one of the most important National Regattas on the race calender. Apparently very rough conditions hindered progress through the rounds.

Ironbridge Regatta was great fun and we achieved many finals and 3 wins (See RESULTS). I'll be putting a few photos from ironbridge on soon. The Juniors of Frankie, Hannah, and Graham did the club proud with some very strong racing, and much improved from last year. Frankie lost the final of her single by no more than a foot, and it was fantastic to watch and support the club. Graham too had some very close racing, losing to the eventual winner in IM3 on the sunday. The Seniors of Bex, Gary and Me (Pip), did incredibly well with wins in the Vet C 4x (Composite with Huntingdon), IM1 W1x, and Vet B 2x, on the longer 1000M course, and did well in the VetB 2x on the 500M Sunday course. With no races in the quad and womens single on the sunday.
On the 10th July is Hemingford Regatta, with several SIRC members competing (just for fun), brute force and ignorance needed for the skiffs used in this traditional local regatta.
More importantly the following weekend is St Ives Rowing Club / Huntingdon Boat Club Joint Regatta and Dragon Boat Racing (July 17th/18th). Download the POSTER HERE.
Also of note is the Cambridge Town Bumps where we have an eight competing. They could do with support during the Bumps night's, and I'll confirm times of racing soon. (20th-23rd July, Tuesday to Friday)

See photos from the Annual Dinner in the GALLERY. It was a fantastic evening with 49 guests including the Mayor and Mayoress of St Ives. The mayor awarded the club with a finacial reward from his own charitable finances, and we are very grateful for his presence at the dinner. We hope that this is an example of the renewed feeling in the club as we unite toward bigger and better successes and a growth of membership. There will be more photos of the annual dinner and of Bedford Small boats Head as soon as Frankie has saved it onto my pen disc for me.

A fantastic days Racing at the Cambridge Winter League February Leg. The Juniors were again outstanding. The two mens Coxed Fours performed well, and the Vet B Quad again did themselves proud. I feel we should congratulate the Watson's, as three generations took to the water to race today. Arthur Watson stood in at the last minute to pull the Vet Coxed Four along, Mark Watson and Luke Watson also performed extremely well in the Vet Quad and Junior 13 Double respectively.

Captain's Report Feb 2010
"The first leg of the Winter League went well with several crews racing and all doing well. Sadly the Novice IV couldn't compete due to injury but will hopefully be back up to strength for the second leg. I look forward to seeing how we get on in the next two... Also, it's really nice to see lots of people coming down and training together. Pip's weights session on Wednesday and Rachel's circuits on Thursday both seem to be gaining momentum. Nice to see a few new members trickling down too, despite the grim weather. Let's do our best to support them."
